Improving Early Mathematics Learning and Teaching in iPad-infused Classrooms

October 21, 2015 @ 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm

How can teachers strategically use technology-based tools to build students’ ability to construct viable arguments about their thinking when solving mathematics problems, as well as the reasoning of their classmates? In this webinar, Interactive STEM’s Pam Buffington and Jo Louie describe what they are learning through the research-and-practice collaboration to improve early mathematics learning and teaching in iPad-infused, K–2 classrooms in Auburn, Maine. Key strategies, learning, benefits, and challenges are shared.

Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC) is partnering with the Auburn School Department and local researchers in Maine to improve student learning of mathematics in the early grades through the integration of interactive mobile technologies such as iPads. EDC is a major partner in the Research + Practice Collaboratory, a five-year National Science Foundation–funded effort to strengthen and reframe the relationship between teacher practice and STEM education in both K–12 and informal settings. The Interactive STEM team is leading the Collaboratory’s focal area of interactive technologies.
