Supporting Mathematical Discourse in the Early Grades

Research suggests that mathematical understanding develops best in environments where students are encouraged to discuss mathematical concepts, student thinking is respected and valued, and sufficient time is provided for students to explore mathematical ideas. Successfully implementing mathematical discourse, however, requires teachers to drastically shift traditional teaching practices.
